Behavioral therapy (ABA) for young children

Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) is one of the most researched approaches to supporting children with autism and related developmental challenges. At Happy Talkers, our BCBA-supervised ABA program serves children ages 2 through 5, focusing on building meaningful skills — communication, social connection, independence, and emotional regulation — in a naturalistic, child-centered way.

About this service

What ABA therapy addresses

ABA therapy uses evidence-based principles of behavior and learning to help children develop skills and reduce behaviors that interfere with their daily life and learning. At Happy Talkers, our approach is naturalistic and play-based — we meet children where they are and build toward meaningful goals that matter to your family.

All ABA programs are designed and supervised by Board Certified Behavior Analysts (BCBAs) and delivered by trained Registered Behavior Technicians (RBTs). Parent coaching is a core part of every program — what happens at home matters as much as what happens in sessions.

“Modern ABA is not the rigid, drill-based approach of decades past. Our programs are relationship-driven, child-led where possible, and designed to build skills that generalize to real life — at home, at school, and in the community.”

Who it’s for

ABA across the early childhood window

Our ABA program serves children ages 2 through 5. This is the period of highest neuroplasticity — when early intensive intervention produces the strongest, most durable outcomes for children with autism and related developmental differences.

2 – 3 years
Early intensive intervention
The earlier ABA begins, the stronger the outcomes. We focus on foundational communication, imitation, play, and social engagement during the brain’s highest neuroplasticity window. A new or suspected autism diagnosis is not a barrier to starting.
4 – 5 years
Preschool & school readiness
Building the skills needed for group settings: following directions, turn-taking, managing transitions, emotional regulation, and peer interaction — so children are prepared for kindergarten and beyond.
What to expect

How ABA therapy works

Our ABA programs are individualized, data-driven, and designed to produce real-world results. Here’s what the process looks like from start to ongoing care.

1
Comprehensive assessment
Your BCBA conducts a thorough assessment of your child’s current skills, learning style, and behaviors. This includes direct observation, standardized assessments, and a detailed parent interview to understand your family’s priorities.
2
Individualized program design
Your BCBA develops a fully individualized program with specific, measurable goals. Each goal is selected based on what will make the most meaningful difference in your child’s daily life and development trajectory.
3
Direct therapy sessions
RBTs deliver therapy under BCBA supervision, using naturalistic teaching strategies embedded in play and daily routines. Sessions are engaging, relationship-based, and data-driven so we always know what’s working.
4
Parent training & coaching
Parent involvement is not optional — it’s essential. Your BCBA will train you to use ABA strategies throughout daily life so your child’s skills generalize beyond the therapy room. This is where the biggest gains happen.
5
BCBA supervision & data review
BCBAs supervise all sessions, review data regularly, and adjust programs as needed. You receive regular progress updates and have direct access to your BCBA for questions and collaboration.
Coordinated with other services
Your child’s BCBA collaborates directly with our speech-language pathologists and occupational therapists when your child receives multiple services — so goals are aligned and progress compounds across disciplines.
ABA is most powerful when coordinated with other disciplines.
Children in ABA often have overlapping speech and sensory needs. At Happy Talkers, your child’s BCBA works alongside our SLPs and OTs — sharing data, aligning goals, and participating in interdisciplinary case conferences. One team. One plan.

Frequently asked questions

Questions we hear often from families getting started with ABA.

For insurance-funded ABA, most plans require an autism spectrum disorder diagnosis. If your child does not yet have a diagnosis and you suspect autism, we offer ADOS diagnostic evaluations — which can be the first step. For families using RCEB or self-pay, ABA may be available without a formal diagnosis depending on your child’s profile. Contact our intake team and we’ll help you figure out the right path.
This is an important question and we take it seriously. The ABA field has evolved significantly. Older, rigid approaches that focused on compliance and drill-based repetition have been replaced by naturalistic, relationship-based methods that prioritize the child’s autonomy, dignity, and meaningful skill development. Our programs are child-led where possible, play-based, and focused on building skills that genuinely improve quality of life — not on eliminating behaviors that make a child "look" neurotypical. We welcome a conversation about our approach.
Yes — most major commercial insurance plans are required to cover ABA therapy for children with an autism diagnosis under state and federal parity laws. We are also vendorized through RCEB. Our team handles all authorization and verification before your child’s first session. Visit our Insurance & Access page for the current list of accepted plans.
Intensity depends on your child’s age, needs, and what’s authorized by insurance or RCEB. Programs typically range from 10 to 40 hours per week. Your BCBA will recommend an appropriate intensity at the assessment and adjust over time. We work with families to find a schedule that fits your child’s needs and your family’s life.
A Board Certified Behavior Analyst (BCBA) holds a master’s degree, completed supervised clinical hours, and passed a national certification exam. BCBAs design individualized programs, supervise all therapy, and communicate directly with families. A Registered Behavior Technician (RBT) delivers the day-to-day therapy under BCBA supervision. All RBTs at Happy Talkers are trained and credentialed, and BCBAs are actively involved in every program.
Yes — and the coordination between ABA and speech therapy is one of the most powerful things Happy Talkers offers. Your child’s BCBA and SLP share data, align goals, and participate in joint case reviews. Communication goals addressed in speech therapy are reinforced in ABA sessions, and vice versa. This kind of interdisciplinary coordination is rare — and it produces better outcomes than siloed services.
